Although the recession officially ended in 2009, workers all over the world are still struggling with layoffs. Many of the people who are still employed are overworked because they have taken on additional duties left behind by their former co-workers. Whether you are in need of a job or up to here with work, you may have thought about starting your own business. However, with small business loans still very difficult to obtain, how can you do it? Here are some ideas.
If at all possible, try to start your business online first. Of course this possibility will depend on the nature of your work, but having a physical store requires a lot of overhead for rent and other expenses. If you can sell your products or services online, you may be able to reach profitability sooner, which will provide you with revenue for starting a bricks-and-mortar operation if you so choose. It is a good idea to consult some resources about requirements before you get started.
Be smart and strategic about your marketing. Running a big advertising campaign through an external company can be expensive. Ask yourself: Can I market myself through (free) social media such as Facebook and Twitter? Is it cost-effective to try giving a promotion through Groupon? Is it a good investment to produce television ads, or would you be better served by spending the resources on your website?
Be sure to do your homework. Find out if your industry of choice is suffering in this economy or is doing fine. For example, small luxuries like baked goods and beauty treatments are prospering while luxury yachts are not.
