Do you feel that good management is all about giving tough and strict instructions and waiting for results to pour in? If yes, then you probably are following a stereo type notion where barking orders at people is enough to get the job done.
In the real world, you have to establish a working relationship with your employees for maximum benefits. Giving orders is only going to take you so far. The moment the employee gets a better job where people talk to him or her with more respect, you will find yourself one labor short.
Patience is very essential for proper management. Not all people are smart as you are. They may not understand what you are saying very quickly. Or, they may have a completely different perception that they are hesitant to speak about immediately. Whatever the reason, you should be prepared for difference in the expectations that you had and actual results you got. If you are patient, you can either drag your employees up to your level or realize that they are actually smarter than you.
A goal oriented approach is very important. If your employee has his or her child’s birthday in the evening and is lagging behind on an important project, the smartest option would be to delegate somebody to help him or her out. To wait till evening before shouting at your employee may leave you satisfied but is not going to work. You need to stay on top of problems and solve them before they arise. Management is not a science. Rather, it is an art where you have to evolve with changing circumstances.
